infoAbout ICR

Our dedication lies in expanding the reach and impact of climate action via the voluntary carbon market. Join us in our mission to unlock and amplify efforts toward a more sustainable future

What We Do

The International Carbon Registry (ICR) is a global greenhouse gas (GHG) program and electronic registration system for climate projects, founded in 2020 and headquartered in Iceland. ICR issues ICR Carbon Credits (ICCs) to climate projects that conform to ICR's requirements and ISO 14064-2, ensuring that every credit represents real, measurable, and high-integrity emissions reductions or removals.

ICR's registration and issuance processes are built on internationally recognized standards and commonly agreed carbon principles, supporting the credibility and transparency of the voluntary carbon market. Employing a quality management system aligned with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO-standardized protocols to enhance the integrity and reliability of carbon credit issuance and verification, ICR ensures that registered projects deliver tangible environmental and social benefits across the globe.

The International Carbon Registry (ICR) operates within a multifaceted and dynamic context shaped by internal capabilities and external forces.

Internally, ICR is characterized by its distinct organizational structure and culture, which guides its governance, leadership, and decision-making processes. ICR's core operational capabilities, including the processes for validating and registering climate projects, monitoring, and verifying carbon credits, are central to its effectiveness. The efficiency of these operations hinges on the availability and professional management of human, technological, and financial resources, and the skills and expertise of our personnel play a pivotal role in driving ICR's success. Compliance and risk management are also internal cornerstones, with policies and procedures in place to ensure adherence to environmental laws, ISO standards, and internal quality checks.

Externally, ICR navigates a landscape shaped by various factors. The regulatory environment, comprising national and international regulations and standards on GHG management, trading, and compensation, influences our operations and development. Market dynamics, including supply and demand for carbon credits and the activities of other GHG programs, define the economic environment in which ICR operates. Technological trends, particularly advances in GHG emission management and registration technologies, offer opportunities for innovation and efficiency improvements. Societal and environmental factors influence public perception and stakeholder engagement across a diverse array of stakeholders, including project developers, validation and verification bodies, investors, marketplaces, and environmental groups.

Together, these internal strengths and external forces — regulatory, technological, and societal — define the context in which ICR operates and evolves.
