Chief Science Officer (CSO)

The Chief Science Officer (CSO) is responsible for overseeing the scientific, methodological, and technical integrity of the International Carbon Registry (ICR) program. The CSO ensures that the program’s rules, methodologies, and operational procedures are scientifically robust, aligned with applicable standards, and support the credibility and environmental integrity of greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation outcomes issued under the ICR program.

Program Development and Technical Oversight Leads the development, management, and continuous improvement of the ICR program’s technical framework, including methodologies, program requirements, and scientific guidance. Ensures that program development aligns with the organization’s mission and reflects best practices in climate science and carbon market standards.

Registry Operations Support Provides technical oversight of registry operations to ensure that the registry accurately reflects project data, GHG mitigation outcomes, and carbon credit transactions in accordance with program rules and technical requirements.

Standards Compliance Ensures that all ICR program activities comply with relevant standards and frameworks, including ISO 14064-2 and other applicable environmental and quality management standards. Oversees the implementation and maintenance of procedures and systems necessary to maintain ongoing compliance.

Program Integrity and Scientific Credibility Safeguards the scientific integrity, transparency, and reliability of the ICR program. Ensures that methodologies, project assessments, and credit issuance processes are based on sound scientific principles and robust quantification, monitoring, reporting, and verification practices.

Validation and Verification Oversight Oversees the engagement and performance of Validation and Verification Bodies (VVBs) to ensure that validation and verification activities are conducted in accordance with applicable standards and ICR program requirements. Ensures that VVBs operate with competence, impartiality, and technical rigor in the assessment of climate projects.
