General principles and requirements for bodies validating and verifying environmental information

ISO 14065

ISO 14065:2020arrow-up-right builds on the ISO/IEC 17029 standard by specifying additional principles and requirements for bodies that validate and verify environmental information. While ISO/IEC 17029 provides the overarching governance framework for any validation and verification body regardless of sector, ISO 14065 applies and supplements it with sector-specific requirements applicable to environmental information, including greenhouse gas statements, carbon footprints, and other sustainability-related data.

ISO 14065 requires validation and verification bodies (VVBs) to have a procedure in place for managing the competence of their personnel. It is the VVB's responsibility to ensure that every team it appoints to an engagement has the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out the work effectively.

Key Principles of ISO 14065

The requirements of ISO 14065 span the full lifecycle of a validation or verification body's operations, including:

  • General requirements cover the VVB's legal status, its responsibility for the opinions it issues, management of impartiality, and liability.

  • Structural requirements address how the body must be organised and how operational control is maintained.

  • Resource requirements set out expectations for personnel competence, the use of technical experts and subcontractors, and the processes for managing and evidencing competence over time.
