Competence requirements for teams validating and verifying environmental information

ISO 14066

Complementing the organizational requirements of ISO 14065, ISO 14066:2023arrow-up-right (Environmental information - Competence requirements for teams validating and verifying environmental information) outlines the competence requirements of the personnel conducting the assessments.

ISO 14066 provides validation and verification bodies (VVBs) with a clear framework against which to assess, develop, and maintain the capabilities of their personnel.

Key Principles of ISO 14066

The requirements of ISO 14066 address competence across the different roles involved in a validation or verification engagement, including:

  • Knowledge requirements cover the technical expertise that team members must possess, including familiarity with the applicable environmental information programme, quantitative and qualitative methods, and sector-specific knowledge relevant to the engagement.

  • Skills requirements define team member capability requirements, including evidence gathering and evaluation, material issue identification, and the communication of findings. Additional skills requirements apply specifically to team leaders.

  • Demonstration and maintenance requirements set out how competence must be initially evidenced and maintained over time through ongoing professional development and periodic evaluation.
