The ICR Biodiversity Program requires projects to deliver measurable and additional biodiversity conservation or restoration outcomes, with a focus on Biodiversity Net Gain. Eligible activities include species conservation, habitat restoration, invasive species management, and sustainable land management across terrestrial, freshwater, wetlands, marine, and urban ecosystems. Projects must comply with local laws and provide a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) or Comprehensive Biodiversity Action Plan (CBAP), outlining the project’s goals, methods, and monitoring processes. Documentation must be regularly updated and submitted for validation and verification by independent third-party bodies to ensure compliance with program standards.
The program emphasizes stakeholder engagement, particularly with local communities and Indigenous Peoples, and requires a commitment to transparency in reporting biodiversity benefits. Projects must also establish clear project boundaries, reference levels, and metrics for monitoring biodiversity outcomes. The crediting period for each project is set at two years, with the possibility of renewal, and credits are only issued based on verified biodiversity gains. Projects accepted during the pilot phase must demonstrate high environmental and social integrity, with a focus on producing tangible, long-term benefits for biodiversity.
